Sex and Coffee: Is there any better way to start the day?

Cup of coffee to start the day

Thank you, science.

Thank you for giving us the evidence for what we’ve suspected all along - that coffee and sex really do make for the best start to the day.

And if you haven’t indulged in this supremely enjoyable morning routine just yet, here’s our simple two-step guide to why and how.

Step one: Coffee can make for better sex

In a study that was probably a lot of fun to research, a team from the University of Texas Health Science Centre has linked caffeine intake to a positive boost in men’s sex lives.

Almost 4,000 American men took part in the research paper, drinking caffeinated coffees, teas, and sports drinks, then answering questions on erectile dysfunction.

Guys who drank between 85 and 170mg of caffeine (that’s about two cups of coffee) were 42 per cent less likely to deal with erectile dysfunction compared to men who had no caffeine at all.  And if you’re a guy who likes three cups of coffee a day, go for gold - this group of caffeine fiends were 39 per cent less likely to report erectile dysfunction.

The article, published in scientific research journal PLOS One, suggests it has something to do with how caffeine can have a relaxing effect on the cavernous smooth muscle (part of the erectile tissue) and how that can improve ED.

According to a 2014 study by research group Roy Morgan, the average Aussie is drinking just 9.2 cups per week. What a great excuse to try your own experiment and up that to 14 cups per week.

Step two: Sex can make for a better day

The general feeling towards mornings is that they can go to hell. But have you ever felt that way after an energising round of morning sex?

The glorious phenomenon that is morning wood makes sex far easier than getting out of bed, and way more natural than the energy drinks some rely on to wake up.

Exercise is a great way to wake up the body and mind, and sex is a great way to exercise - it’s win-win. We recommend warming up with a little oral or sensual touching before diving straight into reverse cowgirl - you don’t want to hurt yourselves.

Starting the day off this way will also give you a powerful dose of oxytocin. This ‘love drug’ comes about from intimacy such as kissing and hugging, and can result in lower stress and anxiety levels, better social skills, and more sexual arousal.

There are plenty of people out there who swear by vitamin pills and supplements in the mornings. Now just think of sex as your very own dose of medicine, as the physiological perks go far beyond just oxytocin. It can also boost your immune system with higher immunoglobulin A levels, lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart problems.

Which do you prefer to kick start your morning - coffee or sex?
