How to Build a Sex Room
Do you love home renovation shows? Do you love sex? Well you’re going to love the brand new Netflix show with a home improvement vibe creating lavish, and sometimes kinky, spaces for couples to explore their sexual fantasies. This is not your typical home makeover series! Say hello to How to Build a Sex Room coming to Netflix from 8th July.
Melanie Rose has been designing luxury homes for over 15 years and when a client asked if she'd ever designed a sex room, she thought, "Why not?" The reality TV series follows Rose as she makes her client’s sexy interior dreams come true. She stresses that her rooms set out to dispel unfavourable stereotypes of a sex room being dirty or disgusting. And the series appears to have a bit of fun along the way with her tradie Mike asked to “test out” some of the inclusions.
"They say you never know what goes on behind closed doors," says designer Melanie Rose in the trailer,"Ooh, but I do."
From mood lighting to sex toy storage, sex lounges to secret dungeons, every design is detailed and brings her client’s fantasies to life. And apparently her clients have given her the nickname “Mary Poppins of Sex Rooms”.
Why would someone want to build a sex room?
- They set the mood for having sex (or something a little bit kinkier). When you walk into your sex room you know what you’re there for.
- Bedrooms are for sleeping so combining sex in a space where you want to relax and fall asleep might not be conducive to everyone.
- It creates a safe space where you can lock yourself away from the rest of the world (including kids and the MIL) which is your sanctuary filled with everything you need to satisfy your sexual desires.
- It gives you a dedicated space where you and your partner can be each other’s primary focus with no distractions.
And to the husband who asked “What, no video games in here?” we loved Rose’s response of “No, you’re going to play with your wife instead”. I think his question more or less explained why his wife wanted the room. Let’s hope she will be the one using the restraints so he couldn’t escape back to his video games.
Want to build your own sex room. Well a good starting point might be to watch the show when it airs on 8th July. Anything which illicits an intake of breath, a warm or tingling feeling in your genitals or quick grab for the remote for a 10sec rewatch is definitely something to add to your wish list.

More than a month agoI've watched the first 4 episodes and I love it. I don't love her giving sex advice as she's not qualified but I do love some of the rooms. The cuddle bed for the poly family was nuts and the dungeon for the gay guys was amazing. Where can you buy crocodile textured wallpaper?

More than a month agoLove it! We have friends who specified a really high ceiling in their garage. I think the architect thought they had a boat on a trailer but it was really so he could get enough height on the single tail whip.
