7 Things You Might Not Know About Testicles

A pair of walnuts to represent a man's testicles

We talk a lot about dicks and vaginas on this blog, either to educate, inform or entertain, and all of us – including the writers and readers – have learnt a lot. One thing we noticed, however, as much as we talk about genitals in all their bits and glory, one thing we have neglected (which is unfortunately often the case in a lot of sex) is the balls.

Those funny little kiwifruit looking things dangling at the back are as vital to sex, enjoyment, and sexual health as every other bit down there and it’s time we celebrated and educated about them a little bit more, so we have done just that.

Here are 7 fascinating things about testicles you may not have known.

1. How’s It Hanging

Like pretty much all of our body bits the testicles are asymmetrical which means they are not identical mirror images of each other. One is always a little larger, and one always hangs a little lower (around 65% of men have a larger right testicle, which is also usually the higher one) This is thought to be not much more than a comfort thing so everything kind of fits without getting in the other’s way, and is absolutely nothing to worry about medically or physically.

2. Do The Twist

The balls are two completely separated organs and are divided by a thin membrane so, like stated above with the different sizes etc, this avoids them getting in the way of the other and prevents things like them getting tangled together. Good news huh! The bad news is that while yes, your balls won’t tangle up together, there is the possibility of one testicle getting a bit twisted inside the scrotum and can cause not only a hell of a lot of pain and discomfort,  but if not treated quickly can also result in permanent damage and the literal removal of one of your balls.

3. Blue Balls Exist

Okay so that tired old excuse of “blue balls” to guilt girls into sleeping with those boys in high school is, to a degree, correct. When a guy gets all aroused and erect the blood flow and anticipated activity can cause a bit of pressure and discomfort in the pants area and can turn the balls a slightly purple-ish colour. The lie/deception/coercion comes from the fact that guys often reckon it’s up to “her” to relieve the pain/pressure or it’s “her fault” it happened. Nah, man. Release is release. It doesn’t need sex or a vagina. Go rub one out in the bathroom, you’ll be right.

4. What’s In A Name

Did you know the word “testicles” is derived from the Latin word “Testis” which means “to witness” and in courts in Ancient Rome men had to swear on their testicles that they were telling the truth (you know, to “testify”).  Something tells us that if men still had to swear on their balls, rather than a mythical sky-fairy, perhaps there’d possibly be less perjury in the system.

5. Smaller and Louder

According to a study done at Cambridge University there is a direct correlation between the mating noises of an animal and the size of its testicles. So basically the smaller the balls the louder the scream. It’s known in science circles as an “Evolutionary Trade-Off” and basically means that animals will develop one trait to overcompensate for another that may be lacking.

6. Smaller but Bigger

Speaking of testicles, in the animal kingdom did you know that the largest balls on any animal (according to scale) are those of the tuberous bush cricket which make up around 14% of the insect’s entire weight! To put this into perspective, if the average human man had the same ratio of balls to body weight, his testicles would weigh about the equivalent of six bags of sugar each.

7. Touch Me, Touch Me

While yes, the balls are an incredibly sensitive and delicate area and need to be protected from damage and extreme temperatures, they are also an area capable of extreme pleasure and sexual enjoyment. To those out there who enjoy playing with penises sexually don’t be afraid to touch the balls, gently squeeze them, stroke them, lick them, play with them. They’re just as important to a fun and exciting sex life as all those other bits!

I love caressing balls gently and licking and sucking them gently too. Love nice round firm balls and massaging and rubbing them gently whilst I am sucking cock.

    A Betty White quote....

Why do people say "grow some balls"? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding.

If you are absolutely sure that you are right, you can "bet your balls" on it. Perhaps that was derived from the "testis" in ancient Rome. Anyway I like my balls, I would never bet my balls on anything.
I have to admit I LOVE them being played with :)

all good apart from the manbashing and denial of responsibility on section 3 and the perjury slur in section 4 - sit and listen to a few embellished domestic violence allegations in court and females would have to grow balls as well

Tuned out at the statement "embellished domestic violence allegations". Another for the NTBF list.

Mate, I've seen plenty of ADVO court cases often involving various degrees of assault from both sides in my job. Unfortunately the stats don't lie and the courts know that almost always it will be the guy in the wrong. In the past several years where I've been in my job, I've seen two matters where the charges were dropped by prosecutors once we found that the victim was not credible. That is in comparison to several charges per day I see at work for DV.

Also from the sounds of things guys like having their balls sucked and a variety of other techniques ."Teabagging" I only just recently watched someone do. And in a lot of cases sucking can lead to "rimming" as well .and be a massive turn on for guys (Not that I've had pleasure for either) .but watched and read about both showing my naivety

Very painful if you get kicked in the balls - the pain is debilitating it seems to spread slowly until you’re almost paralysed- certainly you go down on your haunches and a bout 20 seconds later you’re feeling nauseous - it’s horrible- yet everyone laughs especially at the cricket, I’ve never understood how anyone gets up and carries on after getting one in the goolies - so to the ladies be careful and also be aware - if you’re in trouble then a reasonable slap in the balls will stop him in his tracks.
Having said that I enjoy my balls being squeezed slowly and steadily and pulled - it’s gaspingly pleasant especially in a massage situation - mine have always been loose and the older I get the looser and baggier they become they certainly swing low these days - I have noticed some guys have tight little scrotums - I guess were all different ... but ladies play with them lick them put them in your mouth - mine are waxed monthly for that purpose- it’s very stimulating...enjoy..

Ouch, I can so relate to that. I was once making deliveries and the "Datsun Homer" van had two shelves. I was standing on the ledge of the van with my balls resting on the lower shelf. As I pulled the carton out towards me, my feet slipped off the ledge and gravity came into effect. Yes my balls were on top of the shelf and somehow managed to go over the edge of the shelf and find a way between the shelf and my body on the way down. I rolled in agony in the gutter and thought I was going to pass out and bring up my last two meals. Even today some 20 years later my left one occasionally reminds me of that eventful day. But they still continue to give great enjoyment when played with and when that magical climax is reached. Hardy little buggers.
