7 Things Nudists are Sick of Hearing

Nudist couple holding hands and leaping into the air as they run across a grassy field

Getting back to nature in your most natural state is a lifestyle and attitude shift gaining more and more popularity. From families who just nude it up at home to those who go to nudist beaches and even nudist resorts and holiday destinations, there are still a lot of us who don’t quite get what it’s all about, and who may ask these often offensive, if not ignorant questions… If this is you, please stop and consider that maybe, just maybe, you don’t quite understand what nudism is all about.

But Think Of The Children!!

This desperate, hand-wringing cry is a feature on every single one of our lists and shows that not only do people like to use children as a scapegoat for things they don’t quite understand, but they also (especially in this case) don’t seem to understand the difference between love and sex and nudity and sex. The thing is nudity is NOT inherently sexual. It’s just the natural state of our bodies. The rampant over-sexualising and objectifying of human nakedness has led to this very bizarre idea that nakedness is somehow rude or shameful. Yes, it can be thought of as private, but one thing nudists are VERY aware of is the idea of privacy and, if they are naked, they are only ever naked with other nudists (yes this can involve kids) but it has nothing whatsoever to do with sex, sexuality, sexiness or sexual activity. Just good ol’ body positivity and freedom.

Ew, No-One wants To See That

Well, speak for yourself… The thing is, like mentioned above, as a society we have demonised and shamed the naked body into something rude and disgusting (unless fitting into some ridiculously impossible box) that should be hidden away. The more comfortable we get with not only our own nakedness but the fact that every other person on the planet also has nakedness, as well as the fact that we are all very different and yet all very human, the less disgusted I think we will start to become about bodies that don’t fit into that impossible box. It’s pretty simple though… Don’t want to be around nudists? Don’t go where the nudists are.

It’s All Just Perves And Creepoids

Actually the nudist community is one of the least pervy and least sleazy communities around. Because nudists understand the ethos surrounding the lifestyle (that it is one of nudity and freedom not sex and sexiness) there really is no room at all for creepiness, and anyone displaying that sort of attitude or personality is very quickly shunned and removed from the group. In fact, most of the sleazy, creepiness comes from non nudists sneaking their way into a nudist area for a free perve. Ugh. If this is you, go away and go download some porn. FFS there are children around.

Bet You Get Horny All The Time

Look, I am sure nudists get horny and have sex, because that’s what humans do, but the nudity and living sans clothing has nothing to do with it. Just like you don’t get horny doing your day to day stuff, neither do people who aren’t wearing clothes. There is nothing sexy about folding washing or paying bills…

Sex Is Private! Keep it In The Bedroom

For the last time, it is not about sex! Seriously. Stop it with your sex obsession. It’s getting weird.

It’s Fine When You’re Young… But Gross When You’re Old

So… What is too old? Or too young? Who are you to judge what age is the ideal age to be naked? I can guarantee almost every person who thinks things like this have an “age limit” will start moving the goalposts as they themselves get older… I mean it’s all relative isn’t it? Every single person on the planet from the baby that was just born as you read this to the old man who will take his last breath tonight has a naked body, and has the same right to respect and body positivity as the 23 year old Instagram model does.

Aren’t You Ashamed/Embarrassed?

Why? There is literally nothing shameful about bodies. People who indulge in the nudist lifestyle are, on average, far more confident, happy, and in-tune with themselves than those who close themselves off to the idea completely. Being confident in your own body is a powerful tool and, even if you’re not a nudist per se, those of us who can look at our nakedness and smile, and not judge others for looking differently when their clothes are off, are probably some of the happiest, self assured people on Earth.

I love being naked but living at Maroochydore there isn’t a great deal of room for nudity. Does anyone know of quiet spots around here?

      Unfortunately no.
After the bullshit that happened with police and "exposure" at A-Bay a few years ago there is now nowhere around the Sunshine Coast for nudists etc to go. In fact Queensland is the only Australian state that doesn't have legal nude beaches anywhere and it's completely dumb considering our beaches, and the weather, and the seclusion of some of them.
There is a nude resort/lifestyle getaway up in Noosa but it can be a little hit and miss re attendees and numbers etc.
A few little private parties etc (mostly swingers though rather than nudist) pop up every so often, but mostly no. The Sunshine Coast is not great for nakedness.

Thanks Eva, I have to agree with you, a perfect climate for nakedness but nowhere to go. Hope you have a fun year

I am a home nudist and have been to nude beaches more than a few times. I see no shame, indecency or lewdness in being naked. The curious thing to me is that we have numerous human rights of one kind or another, but we do not have the basic human right to be our naked human selves - the right to be as we were naturally born. Surely, to be in our natural born naked state should be the most fundamental of human rights, up there with the right to life, the right to freedom and all the others. It should be in the top five! When I am naked I am my natural born human self and should have the right to be so anywhere at any time. OK, maybe we should not go to the mall in the nude or go for a stroll on a hot summer night (how great that would be!), but I should be able to hang out the washing, check the mail box or put out the garbage without having to don clothing just for that momentary purpose. If those who don't understand might be offended (and what's offensive about the natural naked human body?) then they don't have to look. But, according to a book that I have, published by the Redfern Legal Centre and dealing with neighbourly relations, it is not illegal to be naked outside of your home so long as you cannot be seen from the street or by a member of the public. Neighbours are not regarded as "the public", so if your neighbour sees you then won't be charged with indecency (a curious label given to the circumstance). Indeed, one case example was a couple having sex in their yard and seen by the neighbours children but the couple were not charged since they could not be seen from the street. And if your neighbour is peering at you naked within the bounds of your property (through or over the fence for example), then they are actually guilty of invasion of privacy by deliberately observing you. So, we should all have the right to be naked and it should be one of our basic human rights, up there with religious freedom and all the rest of them.

For those interested, the book I referred to is: "Neighbours - a Practical Guide to Solving Neighbourhood Problems", by Redfern Legal Centre Publishing, ISBN 0 947205 72 1, published April 2000 and available from there. Have to say, I was very surprised indeed when I discovered from this book (page 175) that nudity is not illegal in a domestic situation as I had believed it was. But to be very clear, you can be naked in your backyard or other area of your property so long as you cannot be seen from the street or other public areas, or an area of your neighbour's property (such as a driveway or side door entrance) where a member of the public (visitors, meter readers, etc.) might be able to access, and if you cannot be seen by a member of the public in general. So if your neighbour can see you over or through the fence, or from their kitchen window etc., then you cannot be charged with offensive behaviour. Likewise if you are nude within your home and a neighbour can see you directly from their windows into your windows, etc. Neighbours are not considered to be members of the public according to this book, nor are visitors to their property once they are inside the neighbour's house (if they too should see you from a window, etc). And if you might be seen by a distant neighbour living high up in a tall apartment building down the road then I guess you are still OK since they are also neighbours - but that is my own assumption. Since this book is written by lawyers, published by a legal entity and no doubt checked by one or more lawyers before publication to ensure the accuracy of the legal guidelines that it provides, then I am confident that we can all romp around our homes in the nude, sunbathe or skinny-dip in the pool without fear of being prosecuted.

There is is distinct difference between swinging and sex and being a nudist.
Being nude gives a sense of freedom and to enjoy nature and the beaches naked.
Weather working on your all over tan or going for nude bush walks, alone or with like minded people.
We need to understand that there are voyeurs in the swinging scene and the same can be said about our nude beaches.... where clothed people will attend and just watch others. As long as they aren’t taking pics or harassing the nudists I don’t really mind.

It’s just a shame we cannot be nude all year round in Melbourne.

I never went to a nude beach until I met my husband but went because he told me he likes to go sometimes and we'd been naked outdoors before. So found no problem with it and liked swimming naked and being clothes free to get an all over tan.But do prefer the nudist clubs as I like the interaction with other people who are just happy to be nudists.

Yes, great article. I know nothing of the nude beaches in the major cities, and the "apparent" issues there but the country beaches are great.
Generally speaking most people on these beaches are naturists. Yes, we are all human and we admire the perfect human body when they are present but we also recognise that we are all different and embrace that as well. However, naturists can also be sexual beings but it is pretty rare to see sex openly on the beach until late when most people have left.
And yes, some nude beaches have secluded areas where people do meet for casual sex. But most people respect those on the beach and keep the sex away from the beach itself. And its not just "straight" men playing with other "straight" men. Plenty of couples in those dunes. It should be all about respect. Respect the right of those wanting a relaxed day on the beach au naturale to not have sex thrust down their neck ( so to speak) but still respect those that enjoy some harmless fun in the sun. As with anything, there will be idiots who spoil it for the rest (been to a football match recently). One would hope the AMM community would be more tolerant than most.

I'm very disappointed with the nudist beaches in Australia. Every time I've been there with my partner, there was at least one guy perving at her and/or wanking in the open. This kind of behaviour (and it only needs a few) drives women away. The situation is significantly better (but not perfect) in Europe.

I disagree, the author specifically says it’s the non nudists there for a perve or sex who spoil it for the true naturists.

This comment is way off. At least from the comments I've read.
Most are full of people who actually read the pieces I write instead of commenting under every single article I ever write with contrary, argumentative bullshit.
Your comments are like a sissy tantrum course!!!
And there are heaps of people who disagree with you.
This ridiculous commenter is seeing my articles through a childish, weird obsessed lens.

      Haha.
Have a merry Christmas. Don't let your bitterness or your odd obsession with me ruin it, eh.
