Chance

A Fantasy

I am briskly walking down the street, clutching my bag towards my body. I adjust my scarf and sunglasses and pray I don't meet anyone's eye. We nearly knock each other over. I'm wearing your coffee all over my nice camel coloured coat. You apologise and start trying to blot at the big brown stain. You ask me where I'm going in such a hurry. I tell you I think I'm being followed by some not so nice people. Well that's no good you say sympathetically. Can I duck in here and buy you something else to wear? I repeat that I'm in a hurry. You insist it will only take a minute. You pick out a black knitted dress and a blue beret to hide my hair under. You ask the assistant to throw everything else in a bag, which you then drop off at the dry cleaners. You ask me politely to fill the ticket stub in and wisely take a quick photo on your phone in case I loose it. You ask me if I'd like to get a coffee and if you can drop me somewhere seeing you've caused my to be late to wherever it is I have to get to. For the first time in a long time I let my guard down and catch myself smiling. I push my glasses up so you can see my eyes for the first time. You reach across and lightly touch your hand on my face and tell me I have an eyelash on my face and you tell me to make a wish and blow the lash away. You explain that you are parked about 500 meters straight ahead and the relief washes over my face as you say that. After about a 3 minute walk we arrive at your car. I look around to see if we have been followed and I spot him out of the corner of my eye in the side mirror. I drop my bag and tell you I think I'm going to can't because I'm so terrified. You crouch down beside me and start picking the contents of my bag up and carefully handing it back to me. That's when you notice the man looking around for me. You pull me to my feet and say to play along. You push me towards the car so I'm leaning on it with my back towards the street. You stand in front of me and lean down to kiss me but change your mind at the last minute. You tuck some hair that has escaped my hat behind my ears and tell me to try and not worry as you are carefully taking everything in. You raise a finger to your lips and make the universal sign of shushing. You make sure you are shielding me from the street and as you are quite a bit taller than me, someone walking past wouldn't be able to see me from the street. We start of slowly and gently kissing each other. You open your coat to wrap it around me whilst you shelter me... More tomorrow, can't keep my eyes open :)
